Made For the Collection of Mary Thorn
Mary's Peace
Mary's Peace was commissioned by Mary Thorn. On Mary's daughter's birthday, she became homesick. She went into a cathedral, lit a candle for her under a statue of the Virgin Mary, and felt peace had overcome her.
Two Blessings
The orb is Mary's prayer for her daughter Nancy. The virgin is blessing the prayer with one hand, while she bestows peace upon Mary with her other.
Seasons
Above the statue is a frieze allegory of the seasons. From left to right, Spring is a baby suckling at the breast of Summer who has her hair thrown back like rays of the sun. She’s looking over her shoulder at Autumn who is mourning under a grape arbor. Winter is an old woman in the snow.
