Ruby is the daughter of Jess, Karen's daughter Anna's best friend. Karen first made Ruby a baby blanket inspired by The Paper Bag Princess. When she later created Ruby's Portal, she brought fabric from that original blanket into the new piece. The two works were made at different moments in Ruby's life, but they are literally connected by the material they share.
